Houston Community Leadership Conference

REALIZING YOUR POTENTIAL AND BUILDING PERSONAL CAPACITY

You are cordially invited to a day of networking, leadership skills development, and community action focused on "Growing Leaders" in the Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) community.

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTIONS:

SESSION I: 10:45AM-12:00PM

1) Philanthropy

Presenter: Lynn Duong

The foci of this workshop are facilitating capacity building of key AAPI
contributors and organizations through strategic grant making and new
approaches and also to know the 3 T’s of Giving: Time, Talent, and Treasure.

2) Being a 21st Century Leader

Presenter: JD Hokoyama

What are the characteristics of an effective leader and how does one become
a leader? During this presentation, participants are introduced to LEAP's
leadership framework of becoming a 21st Century leader. Techniques for
incorporating key elements of this new leadership framework will be shared
so that participants can become successful leaders.

3) Effective Communication Styles

Presenter: Linda Akutagawa

This workshop is aimed to learn how to understand yourself and others'
communication styles, while also trying to understand yourself and others'
behaviors.

4) Assertiveness Training

Presenter: Alan Kumamoto

The goal of this workshop is to delve in to the differences among
assertiveness, non-assertiveness, and aggressiveness. To supplant this, the
group will be practicing assertiveness in mock situations.

Session II: 1:15PM-3:15PM

1) Redefining Success

Panel: Chloe Dao, Viet Hoang, Dai Huynh, Norman Wong
Moderator: Mustafa Tameez

A panel discussion will take place with successful individuals in "non"
traditional career paths. Some of the questions that will be covered are
"What were the challenges and barriers faced?", "How were they overcome?"
and "How do we define success?"

2) Stress Management

Presenter: Kim Szeto

Join us for a useful session in recognizing and identifying the signs of
stress. Through this workshop, learn ways to relieve stress on a daily
basis.

3) Getting Ahead: Skills for Career Success

Presenter: Linda Akutagawa

Learn to understand keys to life-long self-development, while developing a
career coaching framework. Through this workshop, you will discuss the three
critical success factors that you need as an individual.

4) Coaching / Mentoring

Presenter: Alan Kumamoto

Here, you will find the importance of coaching/mentoring. You will have an
opportunity to not only learn how to become an effective coach/mentor, but
also learn how to seek coaches and mentees.
