WORKSHOP DESCRIPTIONS:

SESSION I: 9:50AM - 11:50AM

1) Basics of Conflict Resolution
Presenter: Asian Pacific American Dispute Resolution Center (APADRC)

This workshop is designed to introduce the topic of conflict resolution to participants and start to challenge them to re-think their perspective and approach to conflict.  It is a reflective workshop that will explore the ideas and concepts about conflict, help participants to identify their conflict management styles, and bring forward issues of culture, communication and conflict.  The workshop will also present communication techniques used by mediators that can be used by anyone in conflict as first steps towards conflict resolution.

2) Being a 21st Century Leader
Presenter: Leadership Education for Asian Pacifics, Inc. (LEAP)

What are the characteristics of an effective leader and how does one become a leader? During this presentation, participants are introduced to LEAP’s leadership framework of becoming a 21st Century leader. Techniques for incorporating key elements of this new leadership framework will be shared so that participants can become successful leaders.

3) Legislation Navigation: Advocating Around Issues of Today
Presenter: Asian Pacific American Legal Center (APALC)

If you want to get involved with advocacy but find legislation and advocacy daunting, this session is for you!  This workshop will cover the legislation process, briefings on immigration reform and health care reform, and ways you can advocate around the issues of today.

SESSION II: 2:30PM - 4:30PM

1) IMPROVe Your Business Skills
Presenter: Cold Tofu Improv

A fun and interactive workshop using improvisational theater skills to develop the ability to think on your feet, respond to changing circumstances, increase your creativity and spontaneity and take initiative.  Denise Iketani, Cold Tofu Improv core member and trainer, will explain and teach basic improvisation skills that can be applied in the everyday work environment.

2) Making Media/Shaping Democracy: Empowering Youth Citizenship in a Media World
Presenter: National Center for the Preservation of Democracy

What does citizenship mean to a generation with iPods in their ears and cell phones in their pockets?  Presenters will introduce an innovative critical media literacy initiative, Dilemmas + Decisions, that challenges teens to help shape democracy through media projects that stimulate public dialogue.  

3) Making a Great First Impression
Presenter: Leadership Education for Asian Pacifics, Inc. (LEAP)

If you were a product, how would you market yourself to stand apart from the competition? Learn to use the strategies of successful companies to grab the attention of employers, funders and anyone with whom you want to make a great first impression. Learn tips and tactics essential to a great first impression and positive personal brand.
