Congratulations to our Spring 2019, Cal State LA AAAS 2630 Cohort!

In partnership with California State University - Los Angeles (CSULA), LEAP facilitated the 16-week leadership seminar course AAAS 2630: Asian American Experience. Nancy Yap (Director of Development, LEAP) co-facilitated the course with CSULA professors Jason Chiu and Dr. Juily Phun.

The course emphasized the development of leadership skills in a professional environment using hands on training and tools. A small, but selective cohort of 13 CSULA students examined methods, particularly as it relates to communities of color, in accessing the culture, language, and practices of leadership inside and outside of the university. Each student was paired to an Asian and Pacific Islander (API) mentor who met with them throughout the semester. Over the course of 16 weeks, students learned about values, mentorship, inclusivity, communication, branding, resume writing, difficult conversations, interviewing, and other key leadership skills.

Students also conducted a research project based on alumni data from LEAP’s programs. On May 10, presented the findings of their group research project.

Here are a few testimonials from the students on what they learned this semester:

“[The workshops on] confrontation and interviewing … will highly impact my life in the next months to come and the future career wise.”

“Now I feel confident to send out my resume to potential employers.”

“I loved the sessions with my mentor where I was given direct feedback.”

Congratulations to our Spring 2019 Cal State LA Cohort!
