LEAP Statement on ICE Raids & Military Presence in LA
Our hearts are with the individuals and families in Los Angeles and around the country who are experiencing fear, uncertainty, and harm amid the recent ICE raids and military presence in our neighborhoods. These actions are deeply harmful, and are tearing individuals, families, and entire communities apart.
Los Angeles is where LEAP was born, nurtured, and established. Our roots run deep in LA’s Little Tokyo as this region embodies a sense of belonging — a home that anchors us as we continue to serve communities across the country. Many individuals in the LEAP community and Angelenos are immigrants, refugees, and children of immigrants and refugees. It is a city that is defined by the diversity of cultures, languages, and stories that are an integral part of its vibrancy and uniqueness. Our core values of community, impact, and integrity remind us that we are all interconnected.
Unfortunately, the media too often reduces moments like this to scenes of violence or looting. That’s not the whole story. Neighbors protect each other, faith organizations open their doors, and young people lead with fierce clarity. There is solidarity in the streets and love in action. This is leadership in its purest form — and it's the spirit we believe will carry us forward.
At LEAP, we believe that true leadership begins with courage. Any, and all of us have the right to speak, and to protest. We affirm this First Amendment right, particularly in the face of injustice. At the same time, we remain firmly committed to nonviolence and do not condone acts of harm or destruction, including those that occurred across LA, including Little Tokyo.
When our safety feels uncertain, we return to what’s always been within us — resilience. It’s in our DNA, and it’s what drives us to keep creating spaces that welcomes everyone. As a community, we will strengthen our threads and remain woven. We will remain resilient, and remember that we are stronger when we are together.
This, and previous, moments call on all of us to be informed, prepared and aware. Following are resources for you, your friends and families, and to share with anyone who needs to know their rights.
However you choose to exercise your rights, we urge you to prioritize your safety and well-being.
With love and support,
The LEAP Team
